International security is not (and never has been) only a matter of securing lives and bodies.
The concepts of security, safety and responsibility carry the facade of inclusivity, but empirical evidence testifies to the opposite. The broadness of these concepts as well as the operationalisation of these vaguely formulated normative frameworks have diluted the concepts’ emancipatory power.
Border enforcement extends now along ever-growing geographical extensions and over a prolonged and unpredictable amount of time. State border control previously believed to be confined within the territorial borders, becomes spatially expanded and continuous. The expansion of border enforcement beyond the state boundaries serves to conceal accountability for border-related violence.
These mechanisms within the frameworks of security, safety and responsibility, and through the extended EU border assemblage are maintained by a vast spectrum of European democratic, legal and managerial apparatus in order to administer life beyond its borders.
In this project, I explore the notion of "agency" and how it is perceived in relation to the killings at the Mediterreanen Sea, the extended border of EU. The project centers around demoratic mechanisms that enable violence at the borders. It aims to negotiate our understanding of borders and our agency in maintaining these borders and the practive of violence.
